SUMMARY:Leaf Raking for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:2022 Leaf Raking for Seniors takes place November 5–20. \nSenior citizens can sign up to have their yards raked by calling the CE&Rec Office at (262) 255-8460 by Thursday\, October 27. \nIn early November\, various youth groups will be assigned to handle the raking. They will contact the residents to arrange a convenient date and time to rake.  While the service is free\, donations are encouraged; and every donated dollar is matched by the Optimist Club and shared among the participating groups. \nIn a few weeks\, our annual leaf-raking project will be complete.  Starting during the week of November 1st\, our youth group rakers will receive their assignments and begin contacting residents to schedule the yard clean-up.  Raking is expected to be done by November 20th. \nWhat are the benefits? \nThis event generally results in a donation of $1\,500 – $2\,000 to the youth groups who volunteer to rake the yards of senior homeowners.  Funds come from donations from the homeowners and a matching donation from the Optimist Club.  Seniors avoid backbreaking yard clean-up while the volunteers have fun and get rewarded! \nHow does it work? \nWe will follow the same approach as the last couple years. Here are the basics: \n\nInstead of a single date\, leaf raking will happen over a two-week period starting November 5th and ending November 20th.\nVolunteer groups will receive their assignments prior to November 5th\, but will have the option to complete the work when convenient for the group and the homeowner.\nThe volunteer group leader will contact the homeowner no later than 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled date.\nThe volunteer group leader will call us once the work is complete.\nDonations will be returned to the CE & Rec office by the group leader\, or mailed directly from the homeowner.\n\nHow can you help? \nWe believe we have enough volunteers with trucks or trailers to haul leaves to our drop-off point at Johnson’s Nursery when necessary. \nSpecial thanks to Ed Schlumpf and Kelly Lorenz for volunteering their vehicles.  And…Del Kreuser and John Yusko both were able to obtain help from non-Optimist (at least for now) friends. \nBut\, if you have access to a pick-up truck or trailer and can be available during the leaf-raking period\, please let us know so we can add you to the list—we’d rather have too many volunteers than not enough.  You will be able to coordinate available dates with the leaf-raking teams when they need help. \nSpecial thanks… \nto Rob Dummert and his team at Johnson’s Nursery who stepped up to help us avoid the cost of dumping leaves at Waste Management.  Please consider Johnson’s Nursery for your yard care needs! \n  \nQuestions? \nContact John (414-339-2637) or Jason (414-852-9634) \n  \n  \n2020 Leaf Raking pics \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \nLeaf Raking for Seniors Co-Chairs: Jason Husslein and John Yusko

SUMMARY:Packer Raffle Tailgate Party
DESCRIPTION:Each $100 raffle ticket allows one person to come to the drawing and Tailgate Party. Over $2\,000 in door prizes will be given out to those in attendance that night. Others who have contributed to the purchase of a ticket can attend for $10. Free food\, beer and soda make it a fun event. \nWinners were drawn at the 2022 Raffle Tailgate Party on Monday\, Sept. 12\, 2022 at Village Bowl . Included in this year’s In-House raffle was an autographed LeRoy Butler Packer jersey.  The famed defensive back was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame this year. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n\nIt Happened Again for Many at the 2021 Packer Raffle\nWild screams of joy pierced the air at the Village Bowl when Shannon Dederich and her group won the Grand Prize at the 25th Annual Optimist Packer Raffle held on Monday\, September 13\, 2021.  Shannon\, who had won $250 in 2013\, captured a trip to Lambeau Field to see the Green and Gold take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday\, Nov. 28\, a package valued at more than $5\,000. \nThere were numerous other repeat winners including newly named “Optimist of the Year”\, Larry Podolske\, whose $250 prize marked the 4th time he and/or his wife hit paydirt in the event.  Linda garnered $250 last year and in 2008.  And Larry won $600 five years ago. \nAnother repeat cash-in was registered by Village Bowl employee Jeff Sonnemann whose $250 award matched what he won in 2012. But those earnings were surpassed by the $500 he tallied in 2011 and the $1\,000 that he copped in 2019. \nFormer Optimist member Dave Meyer of Germantown also hit the trifecta adding a $400 win this year to the $250 in garnered last year and the $500 he picked up in 2008. \nAlso winning cash for the third time was Bruce LaPointe of Milwaukee who matched his $250 prize to that which he was awarded in 2017 and 2018. \nAnother club member getting in on the action again was another raffle captain Herb Gross who added $250 to the group win he was part of in 2011.  Herb’ son Adam of Germantown kept it in the family by taking home second prize of $1\,000. \nOther Optimist members sharing in the wealth were Fred Blanke ($600)\, Terra Chmielewski ($250) and Todd Paulus. \nTodd\, two-time club president\, was involved in probably the most bizarre chain of events which started off last year when he won the free entry to this year’s contest (ticket #350).  But not being content with just one entry (and probably wanting to support the club as a whole) he proceeded to buy ticket #163 which won him one of this year’s $250 cash prizes.  Then his ticket #350 was drawn to again give him a free entry into the 2022 contest!!! \nOther $250 winners this year included Carol Muenich and Keith Songstad both of Menomonee Falls\, Renee Hitt of Waukesha\, Carrie Bence of Hubertus and longtime Friend of Optimism Don Matovich\, owner of DJ”s Goalpost in the Falls. \nChad and Laure Demmon in Elm Grove bought a ticket from their neighbor JJ Selland\, former club president.  They also qualified for a $250 award\, but generously decided to give it back to the club for our continued efforts as “Friends of Youth.” \nBecause Shannon and her gang are not going to Green Bay till November 28 (Shannon’s birthday by the way)\, final figures for the raffle are not complete currently.  But while hopefully exceeding $20\,000 in profit\, this year’s event will not match last year’s earnings of $22\,900 nor will it come close to the record setting mark of $23\,869.23 reached in 2019.  Never-the-less\, once all the data is complete\, the club will be pushing the $300\,000.00 level in total take for the past 14 years of the raffle. \n  \nphotos by Jon Cline \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:2022 Post Prom chaperones look like they were having almost as much fun as the students!\nJerry Mislang\, Larry Hebbring\, Kim Wenzel\, Cathy Sharkey\, Kathy Matthiessen\, Pat Streng\, Kirsten Sperl\, Rick Kohl \n  \nIn what’s becoming the rule instead of the exception\, we had another outstanding turnout! 295 out of 305 (97%) of the students made the trip from the Prom at Silver Spring Counter Club and had a fun\, memorable and most importantly\, safe late night / early morning Post Prom at Action Territory in Kenosha. It takes a good team to pull this off though. A sincere thanks to chaperones Larry Hebbring\, Cathy Sharkey\, Kirsten Sperl\, Kathy Matthiessen\, Rick Kohl and Kim Wenzel. As retiring MFHS Principal Bob Vitale said\, you have to be a little crazy to volunteer for this event\, and he’s right! Our Club donated $448 in gift cards and $2\,735 to offset the cost of Prom Tickets. \nThanks again to everyone involved who has made this night something that our club can be proud of year after year. \n  \nPost Prom Chair: Jerry Mislang \nPost Prom Co-chair: Rick Kohl

SUMMARY:Adopt-A-Highway
DESCRIPTION:Looking for new co-chairs for this event. \nThe “Adopt the Highway” program was designed to encourage volunteers to keep a section of highway free from litter. Our Menomonee Falls Optimist Club has sponsored this program for many years. Three times a year we have maintained our assigned road area from Appleton Ave to Mill Rd along the east and west sides of Pilgrim Rd and no medians. We begin after April 1st and must be finished by November 1st each year. \nDuties of the captain\, co-captain are: \n\nRegister with the state as the highway chairperson (this has been done for 2019)\nBring vest\, vinyl gloves and garbage bags supplied by Waukesha County to Prince of Peace Lutheran W156N7149 Pilgrim Rd\nMinimum of 10 hopefully 20 people split into 4 groups: Group A parks at McDonald’s and heads south; Group B starts at the church and heads north; Group C begins at the church and heads south; Group D parks in the Sunny Dale subdivision (close to Mill and Pilgrim) and heads north. Each group walks until they meet up with the opposing group\, crosses the street\, and heads back in the direction they came from.\nIt takes about an hour to clean up the route\nCollect the names of participants and the number of bags collected\nSubmit information along with the location of the bags left on the roadside.\nCounty will pick up the debris\n\nFor the effort\, our club is recognized as a sponsor on a road sign at the corner of Appleton Ave and Pilgrim Rd and the fact that we are doing our part with keeping our community roads clean is an added bonus. The Adopt a Highway Program allows Menomonee Falls Optimist members to donate approximately 1 hour on a chosen Saturday morning\, 2 to 3 times a year\, to assist in keeping Waukesha County clean. \nGrab a friend to co-chair this event with you. We started at 8am and were done by 10 am. The crew included 25 children and parents from the under 10 Falls baseball team\, an Optimist sponsored team. SUMMARY:Softball Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Well\, the 4th annual Optimist Club/Sal’s Pub and Grill Softball Tournament is in the books. Cory Kleeba\, Larry Hebbring\, and myself would like to thank all who were a part of this adventure. I’d like to recognize a few groups that helped make our 3 day event successful. First of all\, to all of our Optimist friends that gave of their time this weekend to work the concessions. Second\, to Sal’s Pub Softball team…. Not a nicer and harder working group of guys around. They kept the games going and the field in shape. Next\, Greg Mattson and 1st Bank Financial who sponsored our grilled chicken dinners on Sunday\, Awesome!! Jeff Steliga and Falls Fest for donating the ice to keep our cold ones chilled. A shout out to Aaron Kleeba and the Village of Menomonee Falls for getting the softball field back in shape on Sunday after the rains. Most of all\, I’d like to thank all who stopped by\, had fun\, and in turn\, made this event stand out as we work to BRING OUT THE BEST IN KIDS. We’ll be back!! See you next year.\n\nSoftball Tournament Chair: Cory Kleeba \nSoftball Tournament Co-chairs: Larry & Marcia Hebbring \nPictures from 2016 tournament courtesy of Don Gorzek. \nMany Optimist Club members volunteered to work at the concession stand during the annual softball tournament held at the Village Park on June 24\, 25\, and 26\, 2016.\n \nMarcia Hebbring rings the “Tip Bell” after a generous softball player and spectator put change in the tip jar.\nCory Kleeba oversaw the softball competition\, while Larry Hebbring was in charge of the food and liquid refreshments.\n \n  \n
