SUMMARY:Popcorn Wagon
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nLarry is working on the teams and schedule for the summer of 2023. You will hear from your team captain soon. This is a great fundraiser for our club! \n  \n  \n  \n  \nA few reminders about working the wagon.  The hours are 6:00 – 9:00\, so workers need to arrive at about 5:45 so the first bag is ready at about 6:00.  As in the recent past we will also have kettle corn for sale each night as well.  Kettle corn is prepared by a 3rd party and ready for sale.  Other processes are the same as previous years.  For newer members\, the club is divided into 15 teams that each work a Sunday to Saturday week.  Each team has a captain who will have scheduled you to work.  They will be present at 5:45 to help you get started and take you through the opening and closing process.  Veteran poppers may just open on their own.  There are written instructions about what needs to be done and are located on the front cover of a 3-ring binder which usually is found on the back counter in plain sight.  If you don’t see it\, look on the shelf below.  This is very important since everyone is expected to close up on their own.  It is easy enough\, but the instructions insure you don’t miss critical functions like locking windows and the door and turning off the propane.  It is best that even seasoned workers review the checklist. \nThere is a tally sheet on the back counter.  So everyone knows\, it is not necessary to mark down your sales\, nor is it necessary to track tips separately.  Each morning the Kernel (Larry) visits the wagon\, counts the money and resets the box to $100\, the starting amount.  He writes in the total from the previous night.  If you wish to mark your sales\, that’s fine\, but only for your purposes.  Larry will often let you know what sales were\, but not always.  If you want to know\, email him. \nIf you are new to the club\, it would be a good idea to stop in at the wagon before you are scheduled to work and let the people working that night show you the ropes.  It isn’t complicated at all\, but like anything\, needs to be done correctly.   Like never forget to turn on the stirrer when restarting the popper\, or you will quickly have very burned popcorn. \nThere are nights when special events occur in the park\, like the concert last night.  It began at 5:00\, so hours had to be expanded to 4:00 – 9:00.  Your captain will advise you when such things occur.  Most concerts don’t begin before 6:00\, but they still require some adjustment to hours. \nIf you are unable to work the week you are assigned\, please let your captain know and you will get moved to another team.  We need all members involved.  We can work with your schedule. \nThe chairman of the popcorn wagon is Larry Podolske.  If you have questions\, want to work extra nights\, or didn’t see the list of all the teams sent by Dan Schwind last week\, contact him at either email podolske@yahoo.com or phone 262-255-6259.  Or see me at the wagon as I’m often there. \n2022 is off and running.  Lenny & Debbie Kimmel are the captains for the first week.  Stop up and say hello to whoever they having working.  It also is a great chance to see what is happening as far as the building of the new children’s play area to the west of the stage arena.  Things are really moving in the park. \n~ Larry Podolske \n  \nProceeds from popcorn wagon sales go towards the many programs support by the Club. Optimist Clubs are focused entirely on support youth programs like the Fishing Derby\, Post Prom\, college scholarships\, essay and speaking competitions and most visible\, the Independence Day Parade\, along with many contributions to youth organizations. \nPopcorn Wagon Chair: Larry Podolske \nPopcorn Wagon Co-chair: Tim Newman

SUMMARY:2023 Scholarship Golf Outing
DESCRIPTION:Wow\, what a day it was.  The weather was sunny\, but a little cool.  We can deal with the cool as long as the rain stayed away\, which it did.  The winning group in Flight 1 was Mike Yanke\, Carl Holzem\, Ken Pulvermacher\, and Jeff Schwalbach shooting -15.  The winning group in Flight 2 was Larry Hebbring\, Larry Barbera\, George Downey and Tom Horne shooting -8.  The winning group in the Women’s division was Cindy Krause\, Kim Strachota\, Cheri Schadeberg and Amy Johnson shooting -2.  The putting contest winner was Mike Eklund with a winning score of 26 (out of a possible 30).  The real winner though this day is the kids as all money raised goes to scholarships for high school seniors this year. \nWe are thankful to all the donors for our outing that helped us maximize our profits from local businesses to individual Optimists that helped us out.  See the attached sheet that details all the donors for the day.  A huge thank you to all.  If I missed someone\, I apologize.  Local businesses constantly get hit with donation requests.  If you patronize any of those listed\, please thank them for their support of our outing.  They really appreciate people noticing and acknowledging it.  A big thank you to the volunteers – Marcia Hebbring\, Shannon Dederich\, Kathy Matthiesen\, Joy Fricke\, Larry Podolske\, Stevie Mistle Wildt\, Laura Ciletti\, and Clara Scheckel.  They make it easy on me as they jump in and handle everything that comes their way that day.  A special shout out to Carol Schulteis and Kristy Gruenwald who not only made the goodies for the drink cart but also maneuvered their cart around 3 courses to make sure they hit all the groups to keep them hydrated with their goodies.  A big thank you to Ed Schlumpf who came out to our event in the afternoon\, just to handle the auction duties for our event.  The voice and silent auctions raised over $3000.00.  A thank you to Jon Cline for capturing the photos for our event and a thank you to Jerry Mislang for helping capture winning bidders during the voice auction.  A huge huge thank you to our committee – Greg Mattson\, Tom Ciskoski\, Scott Drier\, John Yusko\, Carol Schulties\, and Joy Fricke.  It is truly a team effort to pull this off and everyone on the committee pitches in to get donated items we use in our outing.  A thank you also to all those that golfed\, and those that recruited gofers for our outing.  Without the golfers\, all our efforts mean nothing.  We ended up having 38 foursomes register\, with 37 showing up the day of\, which make this our biggest event ever.  Two final thank yous go out to Mike Lehman and the staff at Ironwood Golf course for making the day go smoothly and Chip Bunxel and Bunzel’s Meat Market for preparing very tasty food for lunch\, during the golf and afterwards.  They also donated a nice auction item to us that raised $250. \nIf you have any feedback or suggestions for next year\, please feel free to reach out to me at a meeting\, via email\, or on my cell phone.  We are always open to suggestions of how to make the outing better.  Mark your calendars for next year – May 15\, 2024 (third Wednesday of May).  Thanks again to everyone. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nphotos by Jon Cline \n  \nScholarship Golf Outing Chair: Todd Paulus \nScholarship Golf Outing Co-chair: Terry Frisk

SUMMARY:Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Well\, the 2023 Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls Kids Catch and Release Fishing Derby is in the books\, and WOW\, what a fantastic event it was!  This year’s fishing derby took place the morning of Saturday\, May 13th at the Mill Pond.  The weather turned out decent.  While it looked like it wanted to rain early\, other than maybe a drop or two\, the rain stayed away.  The temperature was cool\, but certainly not has cold as we have seen in the past.  And while the sun did not come out much\, overcast skies provided for some perfect fishing weather.  Hundreds of people enjoyed the derby\, including the 123 kids who registered to fish\, many parents\, grandparents\, and other family and friends who joined!  The fish were biting!  Between 10:00 AM and noon\, at least 43 kids caught fish\, for a total of at least 99 fish caught. \nSome of the highlights of the fish caught were an 11.5” Large Mouth Bass\, an 11” Rainbow Trout\, multiple Trouts measuring in at over 10 inches\, an 11” Catfish\, and a 14.5” Sucker Fish.  We also had an 8-year-old who caught 12 fish and a 13-year-old who caught 15 fish! \nDuring registration\, each child received a t-shirt and a grab bag with several different give-a-aways\, including items from the DNR\, candy\, coupons\, fishing tackle\, etc.  In addition\, representatives from the Germantown Fleet Farm store joined us and handed out items for the kids.  Thank you\, Fleet Farm!  The Neighborhood Watch did a great job keeping any hunger away.  They sold coffee\, donuts\, hotdogs\, and other treats from the concession stand.  Jerry Mislang did an excellent job emceeing the event using the sound equipment Danny Shepherd set-up and ran throughout the event.  In case you missed it\, Jerry had many “fish” jokes throughout the morning\, which really kept the crowd entertained.  Jon Cline took photos throughout the derby!  Door prizes were given throughout the morning to all kids who registered\, and there was a trophy presentation at the end.  And maybe most importantly\, the fishing derby allowed for quality time for families in our community to bond with one another and create very special memories.  The morning was an absolute success filled with so many smiles! \nNew this year\, we had a 50 / 50 raffle at the fishing derby in honor of the club’s 50th anniversary!  Ticket sales totaled $296\, sending a lucky winner home with $148 and bringing in $148 to the club to help cover some of the costs of the derby. \nSue Carny and I would like to thank each and everyone who helped make this event possibly.  A huge thank you goes out to Jerry Mislang\, Danny Shepherd\, Larry Hebbring\, Kathie Jensen\, Kathy Matthiessen\, Kirsten Sperl\, Joanne Wanner\, Lance Newman\, Greg Mattson\, Tom Walkner\, Annie Jurczyk\, Steve Miller\, Larry Podolske\, Bob Wenzel\, Jon Cline\, Fred Blanke\, Mitch Rea\, Del Kreuser\, Stuart Reichl\, Tim Newman\, and Kim Wenzel. \nWe would also like to thank our sponsors and others who contributed to the derby\, including The Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls\, The Village of Menomonee Falls\, The Menomonee Falls Police Department\, the Menomonee Falls Neighborhood Watch\, RB Enterprises of Menomonee Falls\, Krueger’s Entertainment Center\, Fleet Farm in Germantown\, Cops and Kids Foundation\, Sandy Spring Farm\, the DNR\, and Tru Turn. \nWe would also like to thank the Menomonee Falls CE & Rec\, The Falls Neighbors Magazine\, and the Menomonee Falls School District* who helped get the word out for the derby. \nWe sure hope we did not miss anyone\, as there are so many who made this 2023 Kids Fishing Derby possible!  THANK YOU\, THANK YOU\, THANK YOU!  We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2024 Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls Kids Fishing Derby next May! \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nphotos by Jon Cline \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe event is truly a community event with the Village of Menomonee Falls supplying the permits for the event and money for stocking Mill Pond with fish; the Menomonee Falls Neighborhood Watch operating the concession stand; The Menomonee Falls Police Department supplying security and the public address system; the Wisconsin DNR and a local fish hatchery stocking trout\, bluegills and bass in the pond and the Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls running the event. \nFishing Derby Chair: Sue Carney \nFishing Derby Co-chair: Dustin Koehler

We wish her the best of luck!\n\nThe Optimist Club has sponsored and organized the program since 1986. This program would be able to continue without the many volunteers and financial support of this club. To date the Optimist Club has awarded $40\,000 in scholarships and cash awards through this program \nIf you would like to watch the program\, it is available on demand at Falls Cable Access YouTube channel. \nSome of our participants will be in the Memorial Day Parade\, the 3rd of July Parade and attending an upcoming Optimist meeting. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n– – – – 2022 event – – – – \nThe 58th Annual Distinguished Young Women Program returned to the North Middle School stage on Saturday\, April 9\, 2022. Participants from the Class of 2023 were Grace Booher\, Shannon Doherty\, Marin Olson\, and Rachel Ripke from Menomonee Falls High School and Ify Ebije\, Elise Elkin\, and Brooke Stanley from Hamilton High School. Siya Mahajan\, Distinguished Young Woman of Menomonee Falls for 2022\, gave her farewell address and passed on her title. \nShannon Doherty was named Distinguished Young Woman of Menomonee Falls for 2023. She received a $2500 scholarship from the Optimist Club and will represent Menomonee Falls at the Wisconsin State Program to be held in Franklin\, WI this summer. Shannon is the daughter of Linda and Bryan Doherty. Shannon also won the Talent Award and was named the Spirit Award winner by her fellow participants. \nIf the Doherty name sounds familiar it is because Shannon is following in the footsteps of sisters Ashley (DYW 2015) and Kailee (DYW 2019). \nGrace Booher was named 1st Alternate. Grace will receive a $1000 scholarship from the Optimist Club and $300 cash award from Community League of Menomonee Falls. She was also the winner of the Scholastics and Be Your Best Self Essay Awards.  Grace is the daughter of club members John and Carrie Booher and granddaughter of Ed and Bonnie Veth. \nIfy Ebije was named 2nd Alternate. She will receive a $500 scholarship from the Optimist Club. Ify also won the Fitness\, Self-Expression\, and Interview Awards. The winner of each category will receive a $100 cash award. Ify is the daughter of Harriet and Godwin Ebije. \nThe girls spent two months learning a virtual fitness routine\, and preparing their talents. They had a practice interview with judges Jim Foster\, Annie Jurczyk\, Kathy Matthiesen\, and Meg Latus. After tech rehearsal\, we treated the girls to dinner and ice cream at Dairy Queen. Their hard work paid off at their showcase April 9th. They were magical on stage! \nOur program is so wonderfully successful because of the great team I have working with me. Ali Leon did the fitness choreography\, is a co-host and is a contact at school for the girls. Becky Shull returned to co-host again this year. Dawn Mariscal put together the beautiful program book and Good Luck Wishes. Jeanine Dederich coordinated and Keri Duce judged the Be Your Best Self Essay. Rema Kunnath was the Scholastic Judge Chairperson. Former member Kathryn Hoff was the Scholastic Judge. Barb Burja was the Program Judges’ Chairperson. \nPresident Dan opened the show with welcome from the Optimist Club. Kathie Jensen\, Jenny O’Keefe\, Joanne Wanner\, Annie Jurczak\, Mary Goveas\, and Caden Wilson (Carol Schulteis’ grandson) sold tickets and programs and worked the doors. My sisters\, Candy Blommel\, Sue Gorecki\, and Michelle Grandlic\, were on hand to help where needed. Kim Wenzel was the tabulator. WendySue Fluegge and Caden assisted back-stage. \nSpecial thanks to Danny Shepherd for providing the sound for the program and Chris Forston and his team at Falls Cable Access for recording the program. You can catch it on Channel 14 or online at http://www.fallscableaccess.com \nJason Huesslein and Menomonee Falls Recreation Department were so helpful assisting with facilities. We are grateful to the Principal Dan Gebauer and the North Middle School staff for the use of the auditorium. Thanks to Falls Patio Players for providing entertainment at the program and donating gift certificates to our participants. \nAnd finally\, our program is so blessed to have photographer Jon Cline who put in endless hours to capture all the special memories for the participants. Thank you doesn’t seem adequate to express our gratitude. \n~ Cathy Sharkey \n– – – – – – – \n\n\nDistinguished Young Women of Wisconsin 2023 State Finals\n\nShannon Doherty\, Distinguished Young Woman of Menomonee Falls\, was named 1st Runner-Up at the Distinguished Young Women of WI 2023 at the Saber Center in Franklin on Saturday\, July 30\, 2022. She also won preliminary awards in Self-Expression\, Interview\, and Scholastics and was awarded $2750 in scholarships. Shannon is the daughter of Linda and Bryan Doherty and sister to Ashley (DYW of MF 2015) and Kailee (DYW of MF 2019). \nShannon spent five days with 10 other girls from around the state in Franklin rehearsing for the showcase\, presenting the Distinguished Young Women “Be Your Best Self” program to Girl Scouts\, visiting sponsors\, and participating in many personal development sessions. The girls were treated to delicious meals and bowling donated by many gracious sponsors. \nShannon will be a senior at Menomonee Falls High School in the fall. She plans to attend either Vanderbilt University or UW-Madison with the goal of becoming an attorney. \n\n\n\n\n\nBe Your Best Self presentation\n\nIzzy Mrzyglod (Germantown)\, Alexis Hrouda (Racine South)\, and Shannon\n\n\n\n\n– – – – – – – \n\n\n\n \nFounded in 1958 in Mobile\, Alabama\, Distinguished Young Women is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. SUMMARY:Oratorical Contest
DESCRIPTION:(above) 2023 Oratorical Contest\nleft to right: Annie Jurczyk\, Co-Chair; 1st Place: Joshua Mims\, 2nd Place: Anirudh Warrier\, 3rd Place: Sruthi Warrier and Mike Russell\, Co-Chair \n  \nEveryone had a great time at the 2023 Oratorical Contest held at the Community Center the evening of March 15.  Three students presented their speeches on “Discovering the Optimism within ME!”  Two returning champions went voice to voice\, with Joshua Mims taking first place and Anirudh Warrier taking second place.  The third orator was Anirudh’s sister Sruthi who did a wonderful job for a 5th grader.  She will definitely be a contender to watch in the upcoming years.  I know that Mike and I and all of the volunteers have a better understanding of where these bright stars get their optimism. \nThe top two orators will be representing us at the District Oratorical Contest on May 11\, 2023 at the 3rd Quarter Conference in Wisconsin Dells. \nWe were lucky to have wonderful volunteers helping us.  We would like to thank our judges: Cathy Sharkey\, Stevie Mistele-Wildt\, Jim Weitzer\, Dr. Carolyn Anderson\, Shannon Dederick\, and Clara Scheckel; and our timekeepers and tabulators were: Jenn Dedrick\, Larry Hebbring\, Rema Kunnath\, Marsha Hebbring. \n  \n  \nTopic for the 2022-23 school year is: “Discovering the Optimism within Me.” \nContest is open to any student attending school in Menomonee Falls and under the age of 18 as of October 1\, 2022 (no minimum age applies). Prepare a speech 4-5 minutes in length on the topic indicated above. \nParticipants in the Club contest win cash awards based on the number of entries. The winner of the Club contest advances to the Zone contest. Winner of the Zone contest advances to the District contest. \n  \n\n–––––\n  \n\nBeginning in 1928\, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International. The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple college scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nInterested students prepare a 4- to 5-minute speech on the assigned topic to be presented at their local Optimist Club’s contest. The speeches are judged at the Club level\, Zone level\, Regional level (if needed) and then at the District level. Optimist Club Oratorical Contest Winners will compete at the Optimist District Contest for a chance to win up to a $2\,500 scholarship. \nFirst conducted in 1928\, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2\,000 clubs participate in this program each year. The winners at the Club level receive medallions and Zone winners receive a plaque. Districts have the opportunity to provide a first place scholarship of $2\,500\, a second place scholarship of $1\,500\, and a third place scholarship of $1\,000. \nHow To Enter: Interested students submit a speech on the pre-assigned topic to their local Optimist Club. \n\n  \nOratorical Contest Co-Chairs: Mike Russell and Annie Jurczyk

SUMMARY:Chili Dinner
DESCRIPTION:We had a successful Chili Dinner at the MFHS cafeteria on January 28\, 2022. It was a great 2-day event: Thursday we cooked up all the chili and Friday we served it up! \nThis year’s event had some challenges.  We found out we no longer had the steam kettles at the high school to simmer the chili in for that slow cooked flavor.  Food prices have almost doubled\, and due to covid19 we had to have everything individually wrapped.  I think my team did an amazing job tackling each hurdle that came our way.  The take out “picnic” bag of sorts was well received.  Nicki and Tree\, our cafeteria workers did an awesome job keeping things moving along. \nTom Ciscoski\, Greg Matson\, Scott Dwyer and their crew did a great job frying up 120# of hamburger and getting everything into all the buckets.  Kathie Jensen\, Joanne Wanner\, Kathy Matthiessen and Linda Wagner worked tirelessly filling individual containers of cheese and onions \nThanks to Tom Wagner for buying all the food and keeping the line on track the night of the dinner.  A big thanks to Sue Carney and husband Stu Reichl for jumping in and doing whatever was needed to keep everything moving smoothly.  A huge thanks to everyone who volunteered both days.  With everyone helping we were able to raise $3800. \nIt is with a heavy sigh that I am looking for a replacement to chair the chili dinner.  I will be around for whatever support is needed.  I feel it’s time for some new blood to shake things up with some fresh ideas. \n  \nThanks for all your help over the past several years. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nChili Dinner Chair: Kirsten Sperl \nChili Dinner Committee: Sue Carney\, Kathy Matthiessen\, Rose Schwartz & Tom Wagner

SUMMARY:Leaf Raking for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:2022 Leaf Raking for Seniors takes place November 5–20. \nSenior citizens can sign up to have their yards raked by calling the CE&Rec Office at (262) 255-8460 by Thursday\, October 27. \nIn early November\, various youth groups will be assigned to handle the raking. They will contact the residents to arrange a convenient date and time to rake.  While the service is free\, donations are encouraged; and every donated dollar is matched by the Optimist Club and shared among the participating groups. \nIn a few weeks\, our annual leaf-raking project will be complete.  Starting during the week of November 1st\, our youth group rakers will receive their assignments and begin contacting residents to schedule the yard clean-up.  Raking is expected to be done by November 20th. \nWhat are the benefits? \nThis event generally results in a donation of $1\,500 – $2\,000 to the youth groups who volunteer to rake the yards of senior homeowners.  Funds come from donations from the homeowners and a matching donation from the Optimist Club.  Seniors avoid backbreaking yard clean-up while the volunteers have fun and get rewarded! \nHow does it work? \nWe will follow the same approach as the last couple years. Here are the basics: \n\nInstead of a single date\, leaf raking will happen over a two-week period starting November 5th and ending November 20th.\nVolunteer groups will receive their assignments prior to November 5th\, but will have the option to complete the work when convenient for the group and the homeowner.\nThe volunteer group leader will contact the homeowner no later than 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled date.\nThe volunteer group leader will call us once the work is complete.\nDonations will be returned to the CE & Rec office by the group leader\, or mailed directly from the homeowner.\n\nHow can you help? \nWe believe we have enough volunteers with trucks or trailers to haul leaves to our drop-off point at Johnson’s Nursery when necessary. \nSpecial thanks to Ed Schlumpf and Kelly Lorenz for volunteering their vehicles.  And…Del Kreuser and John Yusko both were able to obtain help from non-Optimist (at least for now) friends. \nBut\, if you have access to a pick-up truck or trailer and can be available during the leaf-raking period\, please let us know so we can add you to the list—we’d rather have too many volunteers than not enough.  You will be able to coordinate available dates with the leaf-raking teams when they need help. \nSpecial thanks… \nto Rob Dummert and his team at Johnson’s Nursery who stepped up to help us avoid the cost of dumping leaves at Waste Management.  Please consider Johnson’s Nursery for your yard care needs! \n  \nQuestions? \nContact John (414-339-2637) or Jason (414-852-9634) \n  \n  \n2020 Leaf Raking pics \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \nLeaf Raking for Seniors Co-Chairs: Jason Husslein and John Yusko

SUMMARY:Packer Raffle Tailgate Party
DESCRIPTION:Each $100 raffle ticket allows one person to come to the drawing and Tailgate Party. Over $2\,000 in door prizes will be given out to those in attendance that night. Others who have contributed to the purchase of a ticket can attend for $10. Free food\, beer and soda make it a fun event. \nWinners were drawn at the 2022 Raffle Tailgate Party on Monday\, Sept. 12\, 2022 at Village Bowl . Included in this year’s In-House raffle was an autographed LeRoy Butler Packer jersey.  The famed defensive back was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame this year. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n\nIt Happened Again for Many at the 2021 Packer Raffle\nWild screams of joy pierced the air at the Village Bowl when Shannon Dederich and her group won the Grand Prize at the 25th Annual Optimist Packer Raffle held on Monday\, September 13\, 2021.  Shannon\, who had won $250 in 2013\, captured a trip to Lambeau Field to see the Green and Gold take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday\, Nov. 28\, a package valued at more than $5\,000. \nThere were numerous other repeat winners including newly named “Optimist of the Year”\, Larry Podolske\, whose $250 prize marked the 4th time he and/or his wife hit paydirt in the event.  Linda garnered $250 last year and in 2008.  And Larry won $600 five years ago. \nAnother repeat cash-in was registered by Village Bowl employee Jeff Sonnemann whose $250 award matched what he won in 2012. But those earnings were surpassed by the $500 he tallied in 2011 and the $1\,000 that he copped in 2019. \nFormer Optimist member Dave Meyer of Germantown also hit the trifecta adding a $400 win this year to the $250 in garnered last year and the $500 he picked up in 2008. \nAlso winning cash for the third time was Bruce LaPointe of Milwaukee who matched his $250 prize to that which he was awarded in 2017 and 2018. \nAnother club member getting in on the action again was another raffle captain Herb Gross who added $250 to the group win he was part of in 2011.  Herb’ son Adam of Germantown kept it in the family by taking home second prize of $1\,000. \nOther Optimist members sharing in the wealth were Fred Blanke ($600)\, Terra Chmielewski ($250) and Todd Paulus. \nTodd\, two-time club president\, was involved in probably the most bizarre chain of events which started off last year when he won the free entry to this year’s contest (ticket #350).  But not being content with just one entry (and probably wanting to support the club as a whole) he proceeded to buy ticket #163 which won him one of this year’s $250 cash prizes.  Then his ticket #350 was drawn to again give him a free entry into the 2022 contest!!! \nOther $250 winners this year included Carol Muenich and Keith Songstad both of Menomonee Falls\, Renee Hitt of Waukesha\, Carrie Bence of Hubertus and longtime Friend of Optimism Don Matovich\, owner of DJ”s Goalpost in the Falls. \nChad and Laure Demmon in Elm Grove bought a ticket from their neighbor JJ Selland\, former club president.  They also qualified for a $250 award\, but generously decided to give it back to the club for our continued efforts as “Friends of Youth.” \nBecause Shannon and her gang are not going to Green Bay till November 28 (Shannon’s birthday by the way)\, final figures for the raffle are not complete currently.  But while hopefully exceeding $20\,000 in profit\, this year’s event will not match last year’s earnings of $22\,900 nor will it come close to the record setting mark of $23\,869.23 reached in 2019.  Never-the-less\, once all the data is complete\, the club will be pushing the $300\,000.00 level in total take for the past 14 years of the raffle. \n  \nphotos by Jon Cline \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Adopt-A-Highway
DESCRIPTION:Looking for new co-chairs for this event. \nThe “Adopt the Highway” program was designed to encourage volunteers to keep a section of highway free from litter. Our Menomonee Falls Optimist Club has sponsored this program for many years. Three times a year we have maintained our assigned road area from Appleton Ave to Mill Rd along the east and west sides of Pilgrim Rd and no medians. We begin after April 1st and must be finished by November 1st each year. \nDuties of the captain\, co-captain are: \n\nRegister with the state as the highway chairperson (this has been done for 2019)\nBring vest\, vinyl gloves and garbage bags supplied by Waukesha County to Prince of Peace Lutheran W156N7149 Pilgrim Rd\nMinimum of 10 hopefully 20 people split into 4 groups: Group A parks at McDonald’s and heads south; Group B starts at the church and heads north; Group C begins at the church and heads south; Group D parks in the Sunny Dale subdivision (close to Mill and Pilgrim) and heads north. Each group walks until they meet up with the opposing group\, crosses the street\, and heads back in the direction they came from.\nIt takes about an hour to clean up the route\nCollect the names of participants and the number of bags collected\nSubmit information along with the location of the bags left on the roadside.\nCounty will pick up the debris\n\nFor the effort\, our club is recognized as a sponsor on a road sign at the corner of Appleton Ave and Pilgrim Rd and the fact that we are doing our part with keeping our community roads clean is an added bonus. The Adopt a Highway Program allows Menomonee Falls Optimist members to donate approximately 1 hour on a chosen Saturday morning\, 2 to 3 times a year\, to assist in keeping Waukesha County clean. \nGrab a friend to co-chair this event with you.
