SUMMARY:Junior Golf
DESCRIPTION:The SWIS District Junior Golf Outing is set for June 19\, 2023 at Brown Deer Golf course for $85 per golfer.  The event is open to boys and girls ages 10-18 years old.  Golfer will play in age division groupings by gender.  If a golfer shoots a qualifying score within their age group\, they have the possibility of advancing to the international competition that will be held in July if we are granted a spot from them from Optimist International.  We will be looking for scorers to walk along with the younger age groups and marshals on the course.  The marshals are there to monitor pace of play and to make sure parents are not offering advice to their golfer.  I will send around a signup sheet when we get closer to the event.  If you know of someone that may be interested in playing\, have them go to the OI website and search for International Golf qualifiers to find the link to our event to register.  If you have any questions\, please reach out to Todd Paulus (cell #414-719-0009 or by email tpaulus@wi.rr.com).  Thanks for your help in promoting this event. \n  \n2023 Southern Wisconsin District Qualifier\nfor Optimist International Junior Golf \nJunior Golfers participate in a District Qualifier like this one in order to play in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in July in Miami\, Florida.  A limited number of golfers in each age division will advance to the championships provided they shoot the minimum qualifying score. \nA limited number of golfers in each division will advance to the international championships provided they shoot the minimum qualifying score. If a golfer who lives outside of the District qualifies\, his/her participation will not eliminate a District resident from qualifying. Optimist Districts and Clubs provide financial support for winners to attend the international championships. The amount of financial support provided and the age divisions covered varies by District. There is no guarantee that financial support will be provided to golfers who travel outside of their home District. Please check with the District Chair for details. \n\nDate: Monday\, June 12\, 2023\nRegistration opens at 6:30 am\nTee times start at 8:00 am \nThere is no rain date scheduled for this event if it is canceled due to a weather related condition. Refunds of all or a portion of the entry fee may not be possible if canceled due to weather. Every effort will be made to get the tournament in that day\, even if a shortened event is necessary. DESCRIPTION:(above) 2023 Oratorical Contest\nleft to right: Annie Jurczyk\, Co-Chair; 1st Place: Joshua Mims\, 2nd Place: Anirudh Warrier\, 3rd Place: Sruthi Warrier and Mike Russell\, Co-Chair \n  \nEveryone had a great time at the 2023 Oratorical Contest held at the Community Center the evening of March 15.  Three students presented their speeches on “Discovering the Optimism within ME!”  Two returning champions went voice to voice\, with Joshua Mims taking first place and Anirudh Warrier taking second place.  The third orator was Anirudh’s sister Sruthi who did a wonderful job for a 5th grader.  She will definitely be a contender to watch in the upcoming years.  I know that Mike and I and all of the volunteers have a better understanding of where these bright stars get their optimism. \nThe top two orators will be representing us at the District Oratorical Contest on May 11\, 2023 at the 3rd Quarter Conference in Wisconsin Dells. \nWe were lucky to have wonderful volunteers helping us.  We would like to thank our judges: Cathy Sharkey\, Stevie Mistele-Wildt\, Jim Weitzer\, Dr. Carolyn Anderson\, Shannon Dederick\, and Clara Scheckel; and our timekeepers and tabulators were: Jenn Dedrick\, Larry Hebbring\, Rema Kunnath\, Marsha Hebbring. \n  \n  \nTopic for the 2022-23 school year is: “Discovering the Optimism within Me.” \nContest is open to any student attending school in Menomonee Falls and under the age of 18 as of October 1\, 2022 (no minimum age applies). Prepare a speech 4-5 minutes in length on the topic indicated above. \nParticipants in the Club contest win cash awards based on the number of entries. The winner of the Club contest advances to the Zone contest. Winner of the Zone contest advances to the District contest. \n  \n\n–––––\n  \n\nBeginning in 1928\, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International. The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple college scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nInterested students prepare a 4- to 5-minute speech on the assigned topic to be presented at their local Optimist Club’s contest. The speeches are judged at the Club level\, Zone level\, Regional level (if needed) and then at the District level. Optimist Club Oratorical Contest Winners will compete at the Optimist District Contest for a chance to win up to a $2\,500 scholarship. \nFirst conducted in 1928\, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2\,000 clubs participate in this program each year. The winners at the Club level receive medallions and Zone winners receive a plaque. Districts have the opportunity to provide a first place scholarship of $2\,500\, a second place scholarship of $1\,500\, and a third place scholarship of $1\,000. \nHow To Enter: Interested students submit a speech on the pre-assigned topic to their local Optimist Club. \n\n  \nOratorical Contest Co-Chairs: Mike Russell and Annie Jurczyk
